Project title: ECONOMIC AND GENETIC OPTIMIZATION OF SHEEP BREEDING PROGRAMS IN THE CONTEXT OF EUROPEAN HARMONIZATION

Project number: PN II 52-163

Acronym: OPECGEN

Abstract:

The project aims at optimizing the economic and genetic improvement programs in sheep, in order to increase the production of meat and milk, with a view to promote sustainable agriculture, animal welfare and environmental protection. It will develop programs for improving local breeds of sheep under their specific production conditions. The formation of these new populations is an investment in genetic resources to be attenuated over time. An efficient improvement program maximizes genetic progress per time unit and expenses. The project will introduce as a new element the updating technique, an aspect that has not been applied so far in genetic improvement of sheep in Romania.
